Storage Wood Shed - Use Plan or Buy?

If you have a plan to build a wood storage shed, you’ve come to the right place. I wanted to build one since a long time and never got to it. My garage had enough space, so I kept dumping my stuff in there - lawn mower, garden tools, snow blower etc.

As the kids grew they started adding to the cluster, Bikes, Christmas Ornaments - and a whole lot of other stuff. Finally, this spring I made a commitment to build one and not postpone further. I was discussing this with my dad and he expressed interest and said he would build one for himself after I am done with mine so he could leverage my experience. A few days passed and me and my wife were discussing what birthday gift we should get for my dad’s upcoming birthday. I suggested a “Shed” and my wife agreed it would make a great gift that he can cherish for a long long time.

I did a lot of research on wood sheds and will try to share that in this blog so you can benefit and save yourself a lot of time.

If you think you have to be a carpenter or an expert woodworker to build a shed then may I politely say you are dead wrong. Granted - they do take some initial planning, but if you know where to look and what supplies to buy - the end result can be quite satisfying!

A wood shed makes a great first project for the novice carpenter. It is not usually subject to building codes or permits, nor does it require a lot of time or money. It is a fun project because it lends itself to creativity and you feel good and proud after completion.

I toyed with the idea of buying a prefab storage shed and looked at some. They were pricy and not attractive and the designs were sort of limited,  plus I am not sure what quality materials went in. So building one on my own made sense and was the most cost effective solution.

In my next post, I will cover in detail the importance of choosing the right design and plan and also what goes into building a storage shed.
